Mystic is a portrait of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179).
This portrait is superimposed
on the basic structure of my earlier, geometric
Interior Castle (Revisited) painting. Inspired by the writings of St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1588),
the
Interior Castle paintings describe the relationship
between the soul and its indwelling-but-simultaneously-all-encompassing God
in a systematic, geometric fashion.
Mystic's geometry, on the other hand, is more free-flowing
and less systematic. Upon inspection, one can discover many pertinent items surrounding
Hildegard. These include her staff, a dove, a feather, a castle, a moon and a star. Such
items are partially obscured among other shapes to give a sense of interplay between the
hidden and the manifest.
