Serial Quandaries

Someone asked me recently, are the arts material or immaterial? Paper as an art material is so often treated almost as though it were immaterial, and I thought it might be fun to investigate its plastic properties in a three dimensional manner. What is it that makes the arts material? It is the inspiration or is it the ground?
